Critique of Article - 1931 Words

Evaluation is an important process required to determine the reliability and validity of information from various sources, such as journals, text books, and web pages (http://www.lib.berkeley.edu). The article in question looks at â€Å"the impact of early dementia an outdoor life†. Bennet (2001) is the framework that will be used to help structure the evaluation of this article, as it should then give an indication if the information is clearly justified or not. The study was carried out by four researchers: who have clearly stated their educational and professional back round in biographical notes Duggan et al (2008). The grounded theory approach also involves theoretical sampling which investigates incidents, and po pulations, therefore this tells us that the method used was relevant to this study. A theory should then that stem from the data, this concept was correct in this case, as several themes emerged from the results. The data is analysed as it is collected using interviews, or observations (Punch 1998 cited in Bell 2008). The researcher’s methods related to the grounded theory approach, as indicated. The study was approved by a local NHS research ethics committee, this is necessary to maintain ethical standards in order to protect participants (Bell 2008). Several good points were recognised in the article being; consent was gained prior to the commencement of the interview, therefore participants were protected having an idea of what will happen during the interview, which complies with ethical standards. The researchers also coded the questionnaires using numbers, this was to conceal the participant’s identity, and provide confidentiality. Semi structured interviews were used to collect data from twenty two people who had a diagnosis of dementia, or Alzheimer’s, and were selected through the National Health Service Consultant Psychiatrists of old age .
